Former Arsenal star Sol Campbell believes that Calum Chambers is better suited to a centre-back’s role in the long-term.
Calum Chambers may have yet to convince many football followers that he can develop into one of the best defenders, but the Arsenal youngster has already shown his versatility.
Signed from Southampton in the summer transfer window for a reported £16 million as cover in central defence, the 19-year-old has also been used as a right-back by manager Arsene Wenger.
The injury to Mathieu Debuchy means that Chambers will now play at right-back with Hector Bellerin as his deputy, but the youngster’s long-term future lies in centre-back.
That’s the opinion of former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell, who has explained why he thinks that the England international is more suited to the centre-back’s role.
‘I don’t think he is going to be a right-back or a left-back’, Campbell told Sky Sports. ‘Because of his body-shape and framework, eventually I think he will get into the middle’.
When asked which areas Chambers needs to improve on, Campbell said: ‘Keep him on the pitch and hopefully he will keep on learning.
‘He needs to listen. He will make mistakes for sure, but he needs to learn from them and improve every time he goes onto the pitch’.
Chambers is likely to be developed into a centre-back by Wenger. After all, that is why he was signed in the first place.
However, having versatility in one’s game is always a boon, and playing at right-back is going to enhance Chambers’s defensive abilities.
