Sofiane Boufal has explained why he opted to move to Southampton, in an interview with the club’s official website.

The Saints fought off reported interest from the likes of Watford and Spurs for the 22-year old’s signature and he is sure that the South Coast is the best place for his development.

“Why Southampton? Because Southampton is a very big and good club, a very smart club,” said Boufal.

“I think for me it’s the best club, because I see the director, the coach and the fans and they are all excited to work with me.

“For me it was my choice. I took time to choose the best club for me, and I think Southampton is very good for me and my progression.”

The French international enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Lille last season, bagging 11 goals and four assists in 29 league appearances, and Claude Puel will hope that form translates into the Premier League.

Southampton have become accustomed to summers of upheaval and this year has proved no different. Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama have all departed for pastures new, yet the club has reinvested well thus far.

Promising midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arrived from Bayern Munich last month along to fill the void in central midfield, while Nathan Redmond was signed to provide pace in wide areas.

The capture of Boufal further strengthens the Saints squad and fans will be hoping he can spark the team into life following a tepid start to the season.

Puel’s men have recorded two 1-1 home draws and a defeat at Old Trafford in their opening three league games and they will need to improve quickly if they are to compete at the right end of the table this season.
