The United States has been hosting the World Cup this summer, giving soccer fans from across the globe an insight into what life in the USA is really like.

American food, the hospitality from the people and more have all been praised by visitors who have travelled to watch their nations in action over the last month or so.

But England supporter Oliver Henry has recently questioned why there is so much traffic in Atlanta despite there being so many lanes.

Atlanta traffic baffles World Cup fan

In the United Kingdom, where Henry is from, motorways generally have between three and four lanes, while most A-roads in England have two to three lanes.

Highways in America, however, much like everything else about the country compared to Europe, are bigger.

Yet, when recently visiting Atlanta to watch England’s semi-final with Argentina, Henry has been left baffled by the fact US roads can have six lanes on either side of them, yet he always seems to find himself stuck in traffic.

Taking to X/Twitter, he wrote: “Every time I have been in a car in Atlanta, I have been stuck in traffic. The motorway has 6 lanes each way, how can there be traffic?”

Some Americans have since taken to the comment section of the post to try and explain why that is the case.

One wrote: “Because we don’t have byways. Everyone is stuck using the interstate highways. The only good thing is that they clear accidents quickly, compared to other cities.”

Another replied: “Welcome to US major cities! Many lanes of travel with everyone going the same direction. Take a big sigh, find a good musician or podcast, and prepare to spend some time following the same license plate at 2 mph for 15 miles!”

And a third suggested: “Atlanta is a large, growing city with lots of people and cars. It also has a horrible highway layout. Two major interstates should never merge in the middle of a city as big as Atlanta.”
