Ally McCoist has backed the idea that Arsenal are set to hand star centre-back William Saliba a new and improved contract.

The 22-year-old’s current deal at Arsenal expires in 2024 and McCoist stated ‘so they should’ pen down the player’s future, as he told talkSPORT (17/05/23 at 7:50 am).

Despite signing for Arsenal in 2019, William Saliba only made his senior debut this season, and as McCoist agreed, he has had a ‘rather impressive’ campaign.

It could even be argued that his absence, during these last nine matches, has played a contributing factor to Mikel Arteta’s side slipping down the Premier League title slope – Michael Owen thinks he has been hugely missed.

Yes, Manchester City have come at them like a runaway train, but they haven’t helped themselves.

Nonetheless, it seems as though Saliba is set for contract talks, which was spoken about by Arsenal fan and talkSPORT host, Laura Woods.

“Now, William Saliba, ooh, he is set to get fresh contract talks with Arsenal,” said Woods. “This is after a rather impressive season at the club. His current deal expires in 2024, with the Gunners desperate to get him tied down to a new long-term contract to ward off any potential suitors.”

“Very (impressive season),” replied McCoist. “And so they should actually (tie him down to a new deal).”

SALIBA SHOULD SIGN A NEW ARSENAL CONTRACT

The importance of a player isn’t probably realised until they aren’t out on the pitch and that has been the case with Saliba.

Many knew his qualities after a number of strong loan spells. He showed early promise and started to grow in a role for an Arsenal side that surprised many with how they started the season.

But, during the France star’s time on the sidelines, he has become even more important and perhaps proven to be Arsenal’s most valuable defender.
