Andy Robertson is the world’s best left-back, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Scotland international produced a masterclass in left-back play last night as Liverpool beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to move into a Carabao Cup final.
Robertson kept the tricky Bukayo Saka on a short leash throughout the encounter and, as always, attacked to devastating effect, too.
The former Hull City defender joined Klopp’s outfit for only £8 million in 2017.
And although the German manager revealed that people at Liverpool weren’t exactly thrilled with his defending early on, the 27-year-old has massively improved since then.
Asked if Robertson’s the best left-back in the world, Klopp told a post-match press conference: “For me yes. For me absolutely. Outstanding player of his skillset and the mentality makes him so special. He’s a good footballer but his desire [to improve] each game when he defends with all he has.
“That’s his biggest improvement since he arrived. He was already a massive talent [after joining] but defending-wise we were not over the moon!”
Best in the world?
Well, who’s better?
Robertson has helped Liverpool to a Champions League and Premier League title in back-to-back seasons.
Even bad players win major honours, so that isn’t definitive evidence that he’s the finest in his position on the planet.
However, his consistency is simply frightening.
Consistency is what separates the best players from the ones that could’ve been the best and even without his trophy count, Robertson’s consistency over the past four or five years has been exemplary.
