Mauricio Pochettino claimed on Sky Sports (02/11/20 at 10:45 pm) that Tottenham finishing above Arsenal was like ‘winning the Champions League’ for the Spurs fans.
Prior to Pochettino joining Spurs, the club had endured a long period where they had finished below their North London rivals and the Argentine shared that it was ‘so painful’ for them.
He ended that barren run during his days as Spurs boss, as Pochettino guided the club to a number of memorable wins in the North London derby.
Pochettino was a special guest on Monday Night Football for Sky Sports last night and he shared how he would be stopped in the streets by Spurs fans, who would tell him about trying to finish above Arsenal.
“When we arrived it was 20 or 22 years always behind Arsenal,” said Pochettino. “That was like so painful for our fans.
“People on the street would stop us or fans ‘we cannot finish below’ to break this run for us. That was like winning the Champions League for the people [Spurs fans].”
The one regret Pochettino will have regarding his time in North London is not winning a trophy with Spurs because they came close on a number of occasions.
The man currently in the dugout – Jose Mourinho – will be hoping his previous experiences will help push the club over that dotted line.
Mourinho has won a trophy at every club he has managed and given the forward line he has at his disposal now, it should only increase his chances of continuing that run.
