Dean Smith has told Aston Villa’s official website that Matty Cash was out running yesterday, as he edges closer to a return from injury.

The right-back has been a big miss for Villa during his time on the sidelines, but Smith suggests that it won’t be long until he is available for selection again.

Villa could also have the likes of Kortney Hause and Wesley back from longer-term issues, in what was a promising fitness update.

“He’s done some running yesterday,” Smith said.

“He was desperate to get involved with the ball work but the medical staff wouldn’t allow him to.

“But, after a hamstring injury, you have to tick a lot of boxes first.

“It was good to see him out there running yesterday, also Kortney Hause was out running yesterday and Wesley was in full contact training so it’s good news in terms of the more long-term injuries.”

Smith went on to confirm that Cash could be back in around a week for Villa.

Although that means that the right-back will miss tonight’s game against Sheffield United, he could be back in their squad to face Newcastle United next Friday.

That would obviously be a major boost for Villa, who have relied heavily on Cash this season.

The 23-year-old was only signed in the summer, but he looks perfectly at home in the Premier League and has put together a very impressive campaign.
