Tyrone Mings has apologised to the Aston Villa fans on Twitter for his mistake against Chelsea on Saturday.
The 28-year-old claimed that ‘the timing of the second goal was a killer’ after his backpass put Mateo Kovacic through on goal that put the home team 2-0 up.
Even though Thomas Tuchel’s men were leading 1-0 going into the break, they would have felt fortunate because Villa missed a number of guilt edge chances that they just didn’t take.
But Romelu Lukaku, who proved why Chelsea paid such big bucks for his talents, was at his ruthless and deadly best in front of goal.
Nonetheless, this is the message Mings posted to Villa fans last night about the clash at Stamford Bridge:
“Timing of the second goal yesterday was a real killer,” Mings wrote on Twitter. “So, I apologise to my teammates and the fans for a c**p pass.
“I actually think we played very well yesterday too, which makes it even more painful.”
The most annoying thing for Dean Smith would have been that his side should have, at the very least, put two of their chances away.
But many of them fell to Ollie Watkins, who was starting his first game of the season, and he was understandably rusty.
It will be interesting to see how the Midlands side fair in a new few weeks time because they will be back at the Bridge for a League Cup clash.
Given that it’s a Premier League opponent Villa are facing then Mings might just start that match again and it will be a great chance for the £20 million man (BBC Sport) to put things right.
In the summer, he overcame his biggest mental hurdle by proving many doubters wrong during England’s road to the final of Euro 2020.
Many felt that he shouldn’t have been in Gareth Southgate’s squad in the first place, but with Harry Maguire injured, he started the opening two games and was outstanding.
