In one of the most remarkable transfer stories of the summer, Liverpool are re-signing Jay Spearing to play a part in their U23s.
The midfielder was, of course, a Liverpool player during his younger days, and the club have announced his return to Anfield.
Spearing will play a similar role to Paul McShane at Manchester United. He’ll be a contributor for the U21s and a coach for the U18s, and unless something goes horribly wrong, he won’t be anywhere near the first team.
Many attached to Liverpool are happy to see Spearing return to his boyhood club, and his former teammate Jose Enrique has sent him a message on Twitter ahead of his reported move.
Spearing was clearly very popular during his time at Anfield, and that’s why he will be such a good addition to the youth teams.
Regardless of his talent, this is a player who has been there and done it, he knows what it takes to come through the ranks at Liverpool, and he knows what it means to play for a club with this great history.
Yes, Spearing’s career hasn’t quite worked out the way he would have wanted – he was playing League Two football last term, but that experience will have taught him a lot and if he can pass that wisdom onto the next crop of youngsters coming through on Merseyside, more of Liverpool’s academy graduated may make it at the top level.
It will be interesting to see the impact Spearing can have on these young players.
