Liverpool midfielder Fabinho was uncharacteristically sloppy against Manchester City this evening.
Jurgen Klopp’s side held the Premier League champions to a 2-2 draw away at Eastlands, with Sadio Mane scoring early in the second half to salvage a point for the Reds.
However, Liverpool endured a horrific start.
Kevin De Bruyne fired the Sky Blues ahead after only five minutes at the Etihad Stadium – and Fabinho was culpable somewhat.
The Belgian attacker waltzed by his Brazilian counterpart en route to firing past Alisson, albeit with a deflection off Joel Matip.
Fabinho slightly improved in the second half, but he looked a shadow of his former self for the most part and The Liverpool Echo gave him only a 4/10 for his ‘awful’ display.
As mentioned, it was uncharacteristically poor from the former Monaco powerhouse, who cost £39 million in 2018.
That’s evidence in Yaya Toure’s pre-match praise.
The City legend said of Fabinho to Stadium Astro: “I admire both of them [Fabinho and Rodri]. They are so good at what they’re doing. People don’t realise. I have huge respect for those players.”
Honestly, the 4/10 rating from The Echo wasn’t even that harsh.
Remember, Fabinho was also a touch fortunate not to get sent off after sinking his studs into the ankle of Bernardo Silva during the second half.
That incident right there epitomised his entire performance; always chasing, lacking in control.
If Liverpool are going to win the Premier League title – and they’re still one point behind City – then Fabinho certainly has to be a lot better.
That being said, he won’t be up against the Citizens every week.
