Harry Redknapp told talkSPORT (26/08/21 at 7:45 pm) that Harry Kane not joining Manchester City has opened the title race ‘wide open’.
The Englishman noted Virgil van Dijk returning for Liverpool, Manchester City needing that striker, Manchester United ‘looking stronger’, but it was Chelsea who Redknapp is backing.
All of the above clubs have made moves in the transfer market this summer, some bigger than others, with Romelu Lukaku being one of the standout purchases.
Van Dijk will lock horns with the Belgian striker at the weekend, in what will be quite the battle between top high-quality players and a first early sign of how this title race will fair.
But Redknapp claimed that he ‘can’t see a fault’ in a Chelsea side that is ‘so full of talent’ and someone like Lukaku is simply the ‘icing on the cake’.
“If he (Kane) had gone to Man City then I think they would have been nailed on for the title,” said Redknapp.
“I think that’s going to have big repercussions with them because I think they are still short of a real frontman. I think it has thrown the title wide open.
“There are four of five teams that can win it this year – I looked at Chelsea last week, they looked fantastic. You have Liverpool back with Van Dijk. Man United are looking stronger. It’s going to be a really open title race.
“If I had to have a bet, and there’s every chance I will, I think Chelsea look dangerous. I can’t see a fault in their team. He can make changes at right-back and left-back. He left Thiago Silva on the bench last week. They are so full of talent. Now, Lukaku is the icing on the cake.”

Man City cake walked the title last season, even without playing a proper number nine, but it probably won’t be plain-sailing this time around.
Liverpool managed to finish third even though they hardly played with any proper centre-backs last term.
So, whilst Jurgen Klopp and Co. haven’t been mentioned as much, with perhaps the majority backing either Manchester clubs or Chelsea, they might quietly and dangerously go about their business.
But the players those clubs have brought in, and might still bring in, compared to Liverpool might also prove to be a deciding factor.
All of them have added more quality and depth to their forward lines, so it’s going to be interesting how they fair up against the likes of Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
