Riyad Mahrez told Sky Sports via Football Daily that Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson left him ‘surprised’ during Manchester City’s 4-1 thrashing of the London club.

Pep Guardiola piled more misery on his former student last night, as Arsenal, added with their Premier League woes, have now been knocked out of the League Cup.

What didn’t help Mikel Arteta was his back-up keeper practically – pardon the pun – handing the opposition a goal at 1-1, as he palmed Mahrez’s pretty straightforward free-kick into the back of the net.

After the match, City’s £60 million winger [BBC Sport], shared his thoughts on Runarsson’s positioning in between the sticks.

“I was surprised with the position of the keeper,” said Mahrez. “He was so close to the post.

“I thought he was going to move a little bit that’s why I put it there but he didn’t move and luckily he didn’t catch it properly, so it’s good for us.”

Arsenal cannot buy a win, put in a decent performance or even show their fans that there is light at the end of the tunnel as it is.

So, it doesn’t help their cause when their back-up stopper produces such a horror show inside an empty Emirates Stadium.

The club’s summer signing will be grateful that there weren’t any fans allowed in because if they were then he would have really felt the heat in that pressure cooker that is bubbling up in North London.
