Liverpool kick off their EFL Cup campaign tonight with a visit of Derby County.

It’ll be interesting to see who Jurgen Klopp includes in his XI.

Because the Reds are up against a League One outfit, Klopp is likely to omit many of his big names tonight, with Liverpool having one eye on a visit of Southampton at the weekend.

With that in mind, there’s a good chance that Nat Phillips will get a very rare appearance in the senior side.

Phillips has a influential figure toward the end of the 2020-21 campaign, when he helped Liverpool qualify for the Champions League.

After a victory at Old Trafford, Klopp referred to the towering centre-back as ‘absolutely insane‘ but he’s been off the radar since that season.

This time around, he hasn’t kicked a ball since August due to Klopp preferring other options.

He did, however, play for the Under-21s last weekend in what could be considered a hint that the Liverpool boss wanted to keep him sharp.

And logically, the only reason to keep Phillips sharp is for games like tonight.

He is reportedly [Calciomercato] among the players who the Anfield outfit want to sell in January and although nothing that happens tonight will save the Bolton-born defender long term, he can, if nothing else, remind everyone what a good player he is nonetheless.
