Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has explained why he recalled Andre Green from his Portsmouth loan.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2018-19 campaign at Fratton Park, where he claimed an impressive five goals and one assists despite only making 12 appearances, and of those, just two starts.

Last Saturday, Green made a return for the Villans in the 2-2 Championship draw with Hull City, coming on in the second half and being given a great reception from the home faithful at Villa Park.

Because Green has already represented two teams this season, he cannot now be loaned to another club, but with Villa seven points adrift of the top six, Smith feels Green’s qualities can benefit his side.

The Villa boss, speaking to the Birmingham Mail, suggested the youngster’s delivery in the final third needs improving – along with that of some other players, admittedly – while also admitting he probably didn’t get as much game time as he wanted at Pompey.

“He is a talented footballer and I have the opportunity to bring him back,” said Smith. “We have a big 18 games ahead of us and I think he can help us.

“He has qualities that I like to see in a young footballer. He has come through the system. He is quick and a goalscorer. All of those ingredients prompted me to bring him back.”

Green, who came through the ranks at Villa, has made 32 appearances for the West Midlands club’s senior team, according to Transfermarkt.
