The Scottish midfielder has been linked with a £20 million switch to St James’ Park.
Fulham’s Tom Cairney celebrates after the match
Despite surging into the play-offs Fulham have come up short in their hunt for Premier League football. They were defeated by Reading last night at the Madejski Stadium, and will be playing Championship football again next term.
For Fulham that also means a fight to keep hold of their best players. The likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney are attracting plenty of Premier League interest.
Liverpool and Tottenham are both keen on the Fulham left-back but Cairney has interest from recently promoted Newcastle United.
It has recently been reported, by the Mirror, that Fulham are looking for £20 million to sell the midfield playmaker this summer.
He is believed to be a top target of Newcastle’s but the Fulham manager appears to be of the opinion that none of his star players are leaving. Slavisa Jokanovic is quoted by the Chronicle as stating:
Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic
“I expect our best players are going to stay with us – this is the information I have from the board. We are talking about our most important players – they are going to stay with us.
“Next season will be complicated. We’ll push to be promoted.
“We must be clever in the period in front of us. It depends on the summer. Right now, it depends if we bring in what we need.”
Fulham’s Tom Cairney celebrates scoring their first goal
Fulham will undoubtedly harbour hopes of fighting for promotion in the Championship once again next season. To do so, keeping star players such as Cairney will be a massive objective throughout the summer. Newcastle will need to be very persuasive to get their man.
