West Ham United were beaten 4-1 by Swansea City at Upton Park yesterday.

Manager Slaven Bilic has told Sky Sports that the main reason why West Ham United lost to Swansea City was their failure to work off the ball.

West Ham were surprisingly beaten 4-1 by Swansea at Upton Park yesterday, and the defeat leaves their top four hopes in tatters.

The Hammers had been pushing to break into the Champions League qualifications spaces, but it seems that they will now come up short.

West Ham were very poor against Swansea, with their backline being breached on regular occasions.

And Bilic said: “We had too many passengers, we were second best and relying on other people to stop them. We were not compact without the ball, we were not good on second balls.

“When we had the ball, we were good, we put them under pressure, we were creating and we were passing the ball. Okay, we didn’t have the final product, but we were good. The defensive transition is the key and the biggest reason that we lost the game.”

West Ham went into the game as heavy favourites, but Swansea largely dominated the contest from the outset.

The Welsh side took the lead through Wayne Routledge, before Jordan Ayew and Ki Sung-Yeung made it 3-0.

Diafra Sakho’s goal did give West Ham brief hope of making a comeback, but Bafetimbi Gomis secured the victory in the last minute.

West Ham now face a fight to cling on to their European spot, with Southampton breathing down their necks.
