West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has advised young defender Reece Oxford to not get carried away with the Golden Boy award nomination.

The 18-year-old is a highly talented defender, and has made seven Premier League appearances for the club already.

Last season, he joined Reading on loan, a move that didn’t work out well for him. He managed only five games, and didn’t gain much first-team experience.

He has made a temporary switch to Germany this term with Borussia Monchengaldbach, and Bilic wants him to make the full use of the loan move.

He is certainly in the long-term plans of his manager, but before that, the Croatian wants him to get regular games under his belt.

Oxford has not played a single top-flight game in 2017, but has still been nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award, alongside top performers like Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Rashford.

Bilic has advised the young defender to not let the nomination get to his head. Rather, he wants him to start playing regularly at his new club.

“Someone recognised him to be nominated for the Golden Boy award,” said Bilic, as quoted by The Standard.

“If he goes one way and thinks he is [Kylian] Mbappe then that’s wrong, he needs to use this in the right way. He has got it in him, get his place and start playing regularly. Hopefully he will get that in Germany and it’ll be great to play in the Bundesliga.”
