West Ham United have conceded 20 goals in their opening 13 Premier League matches.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has told the London Evening Standard that his side must improve on their defending.
Bilic feels that the Hammers are still too slow in recovering their positions in matches, and that was what cost them against Tottenham Hotspur.
West Ham were beaten 4-1 by Spurs in their latest outing in the Premier League, and the Croatian boss was unhappy with what he saw from his side.
“We can’t continue to make individual mistakes that are leading directly to goals,” he said.
“The statistics show we are by far the worst team in the league for that. Firstly, we must stop those errors but also we have to react quicker as a team when they are made.
“We can make a mistake but it doesn’t have to automatically mean a goal against us. Take the third goal against Tottenham last weekend.
“James Tomkins gave the ball away but it was not in the middle of our box. Harry Kane scored but it was avoidable if we reacted faster to the danger from 35 yards out. Our recoveries in those situations are not good enough.”
West Ham have made an excellent start to their campaign, but there has been examples of their vulnerable backline being on display.
As well as their defeat to Tottenham, the Hammers have also shipped four goals at home to Bournemouth, while they also conceded twice against relegation strugglers Sunderland and Norwich City.
West Ham have the joint-worst defensive record of any team in the top 14 places in the Premier League, but their attacking class has seen them through so far.
The Hammers have scored 24 times in the Premier League to date, and they are currently in sixth position in the top flight standings.
