The Frenchman has become one of the top free kick takers in Europe this season.
Dimitri Payet’s individual brilliance from free kicks is distracting from how well West Ham United are playing as a team, Sir Trevor Brooking has told BT Sport.
The Frenchman has been in sensational form this season, with a series of impressive free kick goals so far this season.
Of such quality has been his set pieces, there is now talk about him being the best free kick taker in the whole of Europe.
Those goals have often taken the headlines in this campaign, as is to be expected, but Brooking says that they are distracting the attention away from how well the side is playing in general.
“It’s certainly the best West Ham squad have for a long time but the actual potential is great,” he told BT Sport.
“Payet is the one everyone’s tagged on to because he sees a pass. [However] the free kicks distract from the general play of the team.”
While Brooking may be concerned that Payet’s free kick skill are distracting from the overall performance of the team, he will be hoping the Frenchman has more in the locker.
He has been the key to their push towards the top four this season, and will surely provide more pivotal moments between now and the end of the season.
With the race for the Champions League place so close, him providing more moments of magic may be the deciding factor for them.
