The Arsenal midfielder is a part of the England squad for Euro 2016.
Former England defender Terry Butcher has told Sky Sports that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has to start at Euro 2016 this summer.
The Gunners star is part of the England squad for the tournament this summer despite having missed the majority of last season through injury.
Roy Hodgson was determined to have him in his group given his undoubted ability at both club and international level.
So far it is unknown how big a role he will play in the side, although indications from the recent friendly game suggest he will be a starter in the team.
And Butcher would back that decision, saying that Wilshere is England’s best player on his day.
“I would go for Wilshere in there. He is England’s best player on his day. He was the top passer in qualification,” he told Sky Sports.
“I am not one to pick players who have been in top form leading up to a tournament, I want players who can do a job for England, and have been successful in the past. Wilshere is that one, he has to start.”
There are certainly several intriguing decisions for manager Hodgson to make about his team in this summer’s tournament.
Wilshere in central midfield is one of them, while the debate about picking between John Stones, Gary Cahill and Chris Smalling for his central defensive partnership is another.
Who he picks remains to be seen, but it is fair to say that it is a problem that many international managers would like to have heading into a tournament that England will have aspirations of winning.
