The former forward has called for Roy Hodgson to drop Wayne Rooney.
Writing in the Mirror, Stan Collymore has named the England team he thinks should start against Russia.
England finished their preparations for Euro 2016 this week as they won their third game in a row, a 1-0 victory over Portugal.
It was not an inspiring display from the Three Lions though, as they laboured to the victory courtesy of a late header from Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
They fielded a diamond formation in that game, with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy up front and Wayne Rooney in the number ten role.
And Collymore has urged them to scrap that and drop Rooney to adopt a 3-5-2 formation for the opening game with Russia.
“The Russia game is so vital to what follows for England that Hodgson should drop Rooney,” he told the Mirror.
“I would go 3-5-2 with Joe Hart in goal, a back three of Eric Dier, Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill, a five-man midfield of Kyle Walker, Jack Wilshere, Alli, Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose, with Kane and Vardy in attack.”
Electing for a 3-5-2 formation would certainly be a brave move from Roy Hodgson were he to ever go with it.
There could be some sense in choosing it though, as it would allow him to use all of the three central defenders he has taken and free up space elsewhere for the likes of Rooney.
He is unlikely to make the change though, with the diamond looking his most likely formation for the tournament in France.
