The goalkeeper has the most clean sheets in the league, but insists it is all about the team effort.
Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is keen for the entire side to take credit for his clean sheet record, reports BBC Sport.
Forster has 11 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, the most of any goalkeeper in the league. His side have also only conceded 17 goals all season, the fewest of any of the 92 league clubs in English football.
However, the ‘keeper insists that he cannot take all the credit and it is the entire team’s defensive solidity and efforts that have helped to achieve such an impressive statistic.
“As a team we are proud. We defend from the front, work very hard out of possession and put teams under pressure,” Forster said.
“It’s credit to the team, and the back four have been so important in limiting teams’ opportunities against us. If you can keep it 0-0 as long as possible, with the quality we’ve got up front, we’re always going to score goals.”
| Position | Team | Competition | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheet | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fraser Forster | GK | Southampton | Premier League | 17 | 11 | 24 | 2160 |
| Simon Mignolet | GK | Liverpool | Premier League | 22 | 8 | 22 | 1964 |
| Thibaut Courtois | GK | Chelsea | Premier League | 21 | 7 | 21 | 1824 |
| Joe Hart | GK | Man City | Premier League | 20 | 7 | 22 | 1980 |
| David de Gea | GK | Man Utd | Premier League | 23 | 7 | 24 | 2160 |
| Hugo Lloris | GK | Tottenham | Premier League | 31 | 6 | 24 | 2160 |
| Wojciech Szczesny | GK | Arsenal | Premier League | 21 | 3 | 17 | 1499 |
The record for the most clean sheets in a Premier League season is held jointly by Chelsea ‘keeper Petr Cech and former Manchester United star Edwin van der Sar, who have both managed the tally of 21.
It would take some impressive performances from Forster to equal that record this season in the number of fixtures left, but his current record leaves him way ahead of Thibaut Courtois and David de Gea, who have both been highly lauded for their performances so far.
Despite that, Forster insists he is just doing his job and focusing on the team as whole is much more important.
“It’s nice to make the save but it’s all about the team. It’s my job and it’s just nice to do my bit,” he added.
