He leaves as something of a disappointment having missed out on the Champions League this past season, with fans and pundits alike criticising his style of football.
His next move is as yet unknown, but should manager-less Everton try to make a move for his services?
The Blues are reportedly targeting a big name appointment, and Van Gaal would fit that bracket given the European giants he has managed over the years.
They are also after someone who has been successful and the Dutchman is not lacking when it comes to winners medals.
His time at Manchester United may be regarded as a poor one, but fourth- and fifth-placed finishes would be warmly welcomed at Everton after years of mediocrity.
A major complaint under Roberto Martinez was the lack of defensive cohesion, and there is no better man to fix that than Van Gaal. His United side had the best defensive record in the Premier League over the last two years.
Developing young players is another strong point. This year has seen several United youngsters flourish under leadership, and the Blues’ hopefuls could follow suit.
Most importantly, he is available now and likely to be keen to prove himself in England after a disappointing end to his spell at Old Trafford.
Of course, Toffees fans may not be keen given the football that Van Gaal’s side offered up during his time in charge. However, a deeper look suggests the Dutchman could be a better option than many would consider him at first glance.
