He justified his selection last week, as he came on as a second half substitute against Wales and scored a last minute winner to seal a win for the Three Lions.
That was England’s first win at the tournament, and all but guaranteed their progression into the knockout stages.
He may be handed his chance to further impress against Slovakia on Monday, and Merson has lavished him with praise, saying he would fit into any team at the tournament.
“He is the best England player. He could play in the first XI of any other team in the tournament,” he told Sky Sports.
England’s Harry Kane
It will be interesting to what role that Sturridge has to play for the rest of England’s time at Euro 2016.
He went to France as a substitute, but with Harry Kane struggling and Sturridge bagging that late goal against Wales, Roy Hodgson may be tempted into a change.
The game against Slovakia is the perfect chance to test if Sturridge can have an impact from the start, and the Liverpool striker will surely be keen to add to his tally to earn himself a starting place.
