Arsenal beat Burnley 1-0 on Sunday courtesy of a controversial goal from Laurent Koscielny.
Arsenal legend Kenny Sansom has praised their defeat of Burnley, insisting that there was no controversy about their late winner.
The Gunners travelled to Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon looking to continue their strong start to the season.
Sean Dyche’s side were in resilient mood, though, and looked to be on their way to a vital point as the game entered its final moments.
However, a late corner from Arsenal saw Laurent Koscielny convert at the back post via a deflection off his arm.
It was a controversial winner but not for former Gunner Sansom who says he believes that it was simply an accident.
Football pundit Richard Keys is on the other side of the argument, though, insisting the goal should have been disallowed.
His logic is that because the goal resulted in Arsene Wenger’s side securing all three points then the goal should not have been allowed to stand.
“Arsenal were lucky,” he told his official website.
“Koscielny’s goal should never have been allowed. It was handball, not intentional, but because of the consequences of it, it should’ve been disallowed. Have a look at law 18 and what it says about ‘common sense’.”
While the debate surrounding the goal will continue, Arsenal will be praising their luck.
They now have 16 points from their first seven games this season, meaning they are just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
Given how tight the title race is looking likely to be this season those controversial points could prove to be crucial at the business end of the campaign.
