Diego Costa may face a further ban even if he didn’t bite Everton midfielder Gareth Barry, Howard Webb has told BBC Sport 606.
The Chelsea striker was sent off in the FA Cup quarterfinal loss after clashing with Barry late in the game.
He reacted angrily to a tackle from the Everton may, with replays suggesting he may have bitten his opponent as he confronted him.
The footage so far has proved inconclusive, but Webb says he may face a further ban even if he didn’t bite, as a result of his failure to leave the field of play when shown a red.
“I’ll be really amazed if Diego Costa is not punished for his action after the second yellow card,” he told BBC Sport 606.
“He fails to leave the field of play, he’s aggressive again to Michael Oliver and in those situations referees are always told to report that situation.”
“That can lead to another match ban and often does. One thing the FA really frowns on is a player failing to leave the field of play having been shown a red card.”
It is certainly set to be an anxious wait for Costa to discover if he will receive another ban on top of the automatic one from his red card.
If he is found guilty of biting, he is sure to be handed a big ban given how heavily Luis Suarez was banned for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini in the World Cup.
Costa would likely face a similar ban, and with the one proposed by Webb as well, it may be some time before Chelsea see Costa again.
