The former manager believes the Reds owners will want to be title challengers before too long.
Brendan Rodgers has warned his successor Jurgen Klopp that the club will be expecting a title challenge in future, via the Belfast Telegraph.
Rodgers was sacked as Liverpool manager back in October, amidst widespread criticism following a run of poor results at the beginning of the campaign.
Things have improved somewhat under his successor Jurgen Klopp, with him guiding them to a Capital One cup final against Manchester City, as well as the latter stages of the Europa League.
And Rodgers has warned that his old side will be expecting a title challenge in future, although he believes the German will be given time to do so.
“They have a very good manager in Jurgen Klopp in place [but] it is going to take time to bed in his methods and how he wants to work,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.
“The expectancy is to win the league, we went very close in my time and obviously Jurgen will go in and feel that he can improve on that.”
“They felt they wanted to improve and to improve on runners-up would be to win the league but it is going to take time. I’m sure the owners will give him that time.”
Whether Liverpool can be challengers under Klopp next season is likely to be dependent on the work he can do in the summer transfer window.
He is expected to be busy, with many believing that his squad is far from being good enough to be top four contenders, never mind title challengers.
Whether he can get the players in, and remove those he deems not good enough though, remains to be seen, and will play a major role in any hopes they harbour of challenging at the right end of the table.
