Charlie Nicholas has told SkySports that he predicts Newcastle United will beat Wolves in the EFL Cup.

The two teams faced each other at the weekend in the Championship, with Wolves pulling off a surprise 2-0 win.

Nicholas feels Newcastle will get their revenge, with winning twice in four days away to Newcastle too big an ask for Walter Zenga’s Wolves, who lost 4-0 to Barnsley a week earlier.

The pundit is predicting Newcastle record a 1-0 win, to progress to the fourth round.

He said: “Walter Zenga got a response after slaughtering his players.

“Rafael Benitez will be demanding the response this time and while it might not be a classic performance, I think the likes of Dwight Gayle will be determined to prove they’re better than what we saw on Saturday.”

Newcastle have lost three games this season including two at St James’ Park. Wolves will be full of confidence, but under no illusions about the task at hand, to notch two wins in succession against the same side.

Just a week earlier Newcastle beat QPR 6-0 away from home, and will be keen to show that game is a clearer indicator of their abilities, while putting together a rare cup run, after a dismal record in recent seasons.

Newcastle are currently third in the Championship while Wolves are in 10th, but just three points back.
