Paul Merson has warned Tottenham Hotspur’s season is in jeopardy without star striker Harry Kane.
Speaking to SkySports, Merson said he believes Tottenham can cope without Kane for a few games, and then his absence will catch up with them.
Kane sustained ankle ligament damage in the 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall, and Spurs face a crucial spell without their top goalscorer.
Merson warned: “I think Tottenham will be OK without Harry Kane for one or two games, but over a longer sequence of games, I do not think it will be so good.
“If they do not win this game (vs Southampton) and Kane is also out, I do not see them winning too many other football matches in my opinion.”
For what it is worth, Merson predicts Spurs will beat Southampton at White Hart Lane this weekend 3-1, but it is beyond that he has worries.
Fortunately for Spurs there is an international break coming up, which minimises the number of matches Kane will miss.
There is an outside chance Kane could return for the crucial fixtures in late April, the FA Cup semi final at Wembley against Chelsea and the North London derby against Arsenal in the Premier League a week later.
Heung-Min Son and Vincent Janssen are the most likely candidates to replace Harry Kane, with both getting confidence boosting goals in the win over Millwall last weekend.
