Sunderland will face a real battle if they are to keep hold of their first-choice goalkeeper this summer.
Phil Neville
Phil Neville explained how Black Cats stopper Jordan Pickford should remain at the Stadium of Light for at least one more season, in order to continue his development as a player, when speaking live on Sky Sports’ Nissan Super Sunday programme on Sunday April 9th.
Sunderland currently look doomed at the bottom of the Premier League table, with relegation to the Championship looking like a formality.
But one shining light from what has been an otherwise bitterly disappointing campaign has been the performances of their 23-year-old goalkeeper.
He has firmly established himself as one of England’s best young stoppers, and his superb displays have led to rumours linking him with a move away from Wearside, with a whole host of Premier League clubs thought to be interested in obtaining his signature, including Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Sun.
But Neville explained why Pickford should not consider leaving Sunderland just yet, when speaking live on Sky Sports’ Nissan Super Sunday programme:
Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford
“I don’t think they will be able to keep him because I think they’ll need the money. But if I was advising him (Jordan Pickford), I would be saying, ‘stay at Sunderland for another year, get 40 or 50 games under your belt’. Even if that was in the Championship. Become battle hardened. I look at Dele Alli and the experience he got at MK Dons, he’s reaping the rewards now at Spurs. He’s a fantastic young ‘keeper, and one of the best we have produced in a long time.”
Next up for Moyes’ men is a game at home to West Ham United next weekend, and if they fail to win, their status as a Premier League side will be hanging by a thread, as will their chances of keeping hold of Pickford.
