Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth has hinted that Arsenal could move to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window, with the Gunners missing out on the winger this summer.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist revealed that the Dutch international remains on Arsenal’s radar, with Gakpo linked with numerous Premier League clubs over the summer as the likes of Leeds United, Manchester United and Southampton all reportedly came in for the 23-year-old as per the Times.

Gakpo has been one of Europe’s most prolific attackers this season, with the winger bagging an outstanding 13 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, with PSV valuing the forward at £40m as a move in the January window looks ever likely for the youngster.

Whilst Arsenal might be an interested party, signing a left-sided attacker when the right side needs attention would be a strange move from Mikel Arteta, especially given how much Bukayo Saka needs a backup as the England international continues to play week after week for the Gunners.

Indeed, there’s no denying Gakpo’s talents, yet with Gabriel Martinelli thriving for Arsenal and Emile Smith Rowe set to return from injury in December, signing the winger could be an unusual move for the north London side. Though according to Sheth, this is now a possibility.

The Sky Sports News journalist said: “He would be someone that Arsenal would look at. I think it would fit the profile as well, as far as Arteta is concerned, because we know what he’s trying to build a squad of young players who’ve got high ceilings and high potential so it could be one that Arsenal do look at in January, potentially, but the summer is more realistically.”

Arsenal should focus away from Cody Gakpo for January signings

Gakpo’s talent is clear to see, with the winger one of the most productive in all of Europe and a player who could easily become a superstar in Europe. However, for Arsenal, their need for a left-sided attacker is simply too small to justify moving for the PSV star in January.

As mentioned, the right side will be of much more concern for supporters in January, and whilst Gakpo could potentially play in this position, Arsenal signing a natural in the role to push Saka would be a better use of limited funds Arteta will have at his disposal in the winter window.
