West Ham United striker Andy Carroll scored a wonder goal on Saturday, but was it better than Arsenal star Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick?

Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily at 10:51 am on January 16th, Sky Sports pundit Ray Wilkins offered his opinion on whether Andy Carroll’s strike for the Hammers on Saturday was better than Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick on New Year’s Day.

West Ham earned a valuable three points with their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, and the 27-year-old striker put the gloss on what was an impressive all-round team performance with his wonder goal.

And Wilkins raved about Carroll’s goal, when speaking to Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily, responding to a question asking him whether Carroll’s strike was better than the Arsenal man’s effort earlier on this month:

“Oh Andy Carroll all day long. There was a little bit of fortune with Giroud’s, but this was absolutely brilliant, how he pulls off the defender at the back post, and look at that for technique, that is a fantastic goal.”

Slaven Bilic has had to endure what has been surely one of the most challenging weeks he has ever faced during his time in management, with star man Dimitri Payet saying that he does not want to play for the club anymore.

And there could not have been a better tonic for that than a comfortable win, and one of the strikes of the season.

Payet’s actions have actually had a positive effect of the club as a whole, with the fanbase seemingly coming together in support of their manager and team, and the whole situation has almost created a kind of siege mentality.

Who would have thought that West Ham’s star player demanding an exit from the club could eventually save their season?

The best thing to happen this week at the club though, is that it will be remembered more for Andy Carroll’s goal than it will for Payet’s disgraceful actions.
