Dimitri Payet is a key player in the current West Ham United team.
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, November 19, 2016) that West Ham United should sell Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window.
Merson believes that if West Ham get an offer of £30 million for Payet, then they should sell the France international attacking midfielder.
“If someone came in for £30 million in January, I would sell Payet,” said the Englishman on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, November 19, 2016). “No doubt about that.”
“He is 29,” added Merson. “If you got £30m for him, that’s a lot of money. I don’t think anybody is going to pay £30m for him in my opinion because it is dead money by the time you put all his wages on top of that, it’s a £50m deal.”
Payet has not been exactly in great form so far this season, but the Frenchman still remains West Ham’s best player.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has scored one goal and created 43 chances in 10 Premier League appearances for the Hammers so far this campaign.
West Ham are fourth from bottom in the league table at the moment and are in serious danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
It is hard to see the Hammers entertain any bid for Payet in the January transfer window, especially if the team continue to underperform and the threat of relegation remains.
Moreover, it will be hard for the London club to replace the former Marseille star with an equally good player in January.
