Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd told the Football Show on Sky Sports (12/10/20 at 10:30 am) that he believes Andy Robertson played his ‘best game’ for his country on Sunday.
Liverpool’s energetic left-back helped the Scots to a 1-0 win over Slovakia in the UEFA Nations League – days after their penalty shootout win over Israel which means they are now one game away from reaching their first major tournament in over 20 years.
These last few days would have been a much-needed change of scenery for Robertson because he endured a morale-sapping 7-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa last time out.
Nonetheless, Boyd feels that Scotland are now seeing the Robertson that causes havoc on the left flank for his club and a lack of pressure is playing a part in that positive form.
“I thought Andy Robertson had his best game for Scotland,” Boyd told Sky Sports. “He looked more relaxed. He looked as though he enjoyed his football going forward.
“Albeit, he got booked and he is out of the Czech Republic game on Wednesday night. That was more the Andy Robertson we see, week in and week out for Liverpool.
“Maybe that’s because the pressure is off in terms of the big game that everybody had been building up for the last few months against Israel on Thursday night, and will then focus on the game against Serbia in November.”
The main event for Robertson and Scotland will come next month when they take on Serbia for a place in next summer’s European Championships.
Robertson, 26, would have only been two years old the last time his home nation took to the field in a major tournament, so he will be mightily desperate to put that right.
There’s no doubt that the boyhood Celtic fan faces different challenges for his country than he does at club level, but the leadership qualities he has learnt at Anfield are seemingly helping him on the international stage.
