The former Liverpool star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Leeds could struggle in the second half of the season due to the way Marcelo Bielsa’s team play.
However, Carragher expects the West Yorkshire club to finish above the bottom three in the Premier League table in 2020-21.
This season will be the first time that Leeds will play in the top flight of English football since 2004, having won automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
Carragher told The Telegraph: “Any team coming up, just stay up. For me, it would be a successful season if they are not involved in a relegation scrap. They have just bought Rodrigo for a few quid so it looks like they might spend a bit of money.
“I think Leeds will establish themselves. We know Bielsa’s teams start quickly and at times have faded. So you might see Leeds get off to a good start.
“Maybe the second half of the season will be a little more difficult for them. If crowds get into Elland Road in the second half of the season it will be tough going there.”
Staying positive
Leeds have a strong team, and the Whites have also signed attacker Rodrigo and central defender Robin Koch in the summer transfer window so far.
No one expects the Whites to challenge for the Europa League places this season, but the Elland Road faithful will be confident that the team will stay up.
Bielsa’s teams play a high-pressing game throughout the season, and it did not seem to affect Leeds in 2019-20, as they got the job done.
It should not affect Leeds in the Premier League in 2020-21 either, as the players know what to expect, with most of them having worked with Bielsa for two years.
