According to a recent report in The Sun, Manchester United are interested in signing Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that Dier, who can operate as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, is valued at £40 million.

The 23-year-old has improved and developed during his time at Tottenham and is an important player for the team.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, though, does not think that Dier would be a great signing for United.

“I am not quite sure,” said Thompson when asked if Dier is an appropriate target for United on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, April 1, 2017). “I would think there would be probably other players.”

“He would probably be a massive upgrade on Fellaini, so I can see why Manchester United are interested in that area, but does that make it a right decision?” added Thompson about Dier. “I think he should be quite flattered by the decision.”

Dier is not having the season he had in 2015-16, but no one can doubt his quality and talent.

The 23-year-old would enhance the quality of the current United squad, but Tottenham fans will hope that he remains at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 62 points from 29 matches, seven points behind leaders and London rivals Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will return to action on Wednesday evening when they take on relegation candidates Swansea City away from home at the Liberty Stadium in the league.
