Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has admitted his surprise after seeing the club move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to get business done early in the January transfer window and two deals are in the pipeline.
HITC Football understands that Tottenham are optimistic of agreeing a deal to sign Genoa defender Radu Dragusin this weekend.
Sources also indicate that Tottenham will be signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner on loan until the end of the season.
Spurs will have an option to turn the deal permanent for around £15.5million and Werner is expected to undergo a medical very soon.
Michael Dawson reacts to Tottenham moving for Timo Werner
Tottenham’s decision to bring Werner back to the Premier League has raised more than a few eyebrows.
Werner joined Chelsea in 2020 having been a goal machine in German football with RB Leipzig.
The Blues didn’t see the best of Werner though and he lasted just two years at Stamford Bridge before heading back to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022.
Werner hasn’t recaptured his best form despite his return home and is now down the pecking order at RB Leipzig, meaning Tottenham have been able to swoop in.
Some Spurs fans may be a little baffled by the move and former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson has now shared his verdict.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Dawson admitted that he was ‘really, really’ surprised when he saw rumours surrounding Werner to Tottenham on Saturday morning.
Dawson feels that Werner is only going to be a short-term option for Tottenham because Son Heung-min is heading to the Asian Cup.

Dawson thinks that Tottenham may simply see Werner as a player who can sneak a top-four place, seemingly doubting that he will stick around beyond the end of the season.
“I was surprised when I woke up this morning, I really, really was, and seen that he’d been linked and I can think… it’s only going to be a loan until the summer and the reason being that Son is not in the building now, he’s got 12 Premier League goals this season so they’re going to have to bring goals from somewhere,” said Dawson. “Is Werner the man? Well, we didn’t see it at Chelsea but I think last season, he got nine goals and three assists for RB Leipzig.”
“It’s a surprise, it’s going to be one for the short term rather than the long term, and that’s obviously what Spurs are looking at. They’re in a great position, one point behind Arsenal, and that’s incredible,” he added.
Ange Postecoglou loves speed in his attack and Werner certainly provides plenty of pace.
The problem at Chelsea was that Werner was offside too often or simply wayward with his finishing.
Tottenham have belief that Werner can make a big impact between now and the summer, and if he does thrive under Postecoglou, that £15.5million purchase option could look like a bargain.
