Jordan Henderson is obviously a brilliant captain for Liverpool.

The former Sunderland midfielder skippered the Reds to a first-ever Premier League title last season and has had the armband while Jurgen Klopp has masterminded Champions League final entries in two of the past three campaigns.

And last week there was footage doing the rounds of Henderson shouting words of encouragement to his Liverpool team-mates from the sidelines as Klopp’s side thrashed Atalanta.

The 30-year-old used to be an easy target for fans to criticise, but now he’s a massive figure on and off the field for Liverpool.

And he is no less of a leader on international duty either, if Alan Smith’s comments are true.

Smith, writing in his column for The Standard, revealed that Henderson was consoling an upset Joe Gomez after his clubmate suffered a serious knee injury in England training this week, with the 23-year-old later requiring surgery.

Gareth Southgate revealed earlier in the week that Gomez was in agony and that it was an ‘upsetting’ spectacle to witness.

The former Arsenal striker added that Henderson made ‘arrangements’ with Gomez’s family after the incident.

Smith said: “There seems little doubt that Henderson will play on Sunday. He is, after all, a huge presence in the camp, a character deeply admired by outhgate and hugely respected by his teammates.

“When Joe Gomez suffered that serious injury earlier this week, Henderson was quickly on hand to console his Liverpool clubmate and help put arrangements in place with the lad’s family.”

It’s little gestures here and there which make a huge difference to people in need and this – if true – is just an example of why Henderson is such a popular player – for Liverpool and England.
