Paul Robinson has told The Football Show on Sky Sports (22/09/20 at 12:25 pm) that Tottenham signing Sergio Reguilon ‘spells the end’ for Ryan Sessegnon.

The 20-year-old was purchased by Spurs last summer after years and years of links with the highly-rated attacker.

But injuries and a lack of form have resulted in the versatile player struggling to settle down in North London following that switch from Fulham.

Former Spurs keeper, Robinson, believes Jose Mourinho now has a ‘great headache’ because he can choose from a strong group of players.

“It’s great headaches for Jose to have now,” Robinson told Sky Sports. “You can see the starting XI.

“We are talking about the likes of Lo Celso, Bergwijn, Moura, Lamela, Dele Alli and Eric Dier, who cannot get into [Robinson’s best Spurs] starting XI. That’s just my personal opinion on the starting XI.

“I think the arrival of Matt Doherty has been a very, very astute signing. Serge Aurier gives the team a lot going forward, but defensively they conceded a lot down that side.

“Reguilon coming in at left-back. I think that potentially spells the end for Ryan Sessegnon. It will probably see him move out on loan or he will leave along with Danny Rose.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Sessegnon can operate as a left-back and as a left-sided winger, but he has mainly made a name for himself further up the field.

It would be a surprise if Mourinho sees the Englishman as a left-back because like Serge Aurier, he is more attack orientated and it’s not the style of fullback that he likes.

Given that Spurs have so many matches coming up, it could see Sessegnon stay at the club, but he’s perhaps better off earning regular game time on loan elsewhere.
