The West Ham United striker has really struggled since making his summer switch to the London Stadium.
Ex-Hammers star Tony Cottee sat down for an exclusive interview with popular sports betting company Sporting Bet, and expressed his concern for West Ham striker Javier Hernandez.
The Mexico international joined the east London outfit from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £16 million, but he has failed to establish himself at the London Stadium, scoring just four goals in 21 outings in all competitions thus far.
He has endured some tough luck with injuries, however, and that combined with Marko Arnautovic’s fine form has seen him fall down the striking pecking order at West Ham.
Cottee, who scored 148 goals for the Hammers, admitted that he is concerned with Chicharito, when speaking exclusively to Sporting Bet, suggesting that a modern-day striker should offer more than the Mexican has this season:
“I’m concerned with Chicharito because I think the modern striker needs to do more for the team than just put the ball into the net. I think he’s the best finisher at the club, but he needs to start banging some goals in. Chicharito hasn’t played in his preferred position and he’s been up there on his own with no service when he has played there so I do feel sorry for him.”
With the January transfer window now open for business, and rumours linking Hernandez with an exit from the club refusing to go away, it is looking ever more likely that the 29-year-old’s stay in east London could be cut short.
And that would be a real shame for both the player and club, what with the fanfare that surrounded his move to West Ham in the summer.
