Tottenham Hotspur host Ligue 1 side Monaco at Wembley on Wednesday.
Charlie Nicholas has told Sky Sports that he fancies Tottenham Hotspur to kick off their Champions League campaign with a win by squeezing past Monaco on Wednesday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side welcome the Ligue 1 outfit to Wembley tomorrow night for what is their first game in the competition for over five years now.
Many of Spurs’ best XI have not appeared in the competition period, while for others it has been a while since they did play Champions League football.
But Tottenham go into the game on the back of a 4-0 demolition at Stoke City in a morale-boosting result which might quell any anxiety among the Lilywhites.
Monaco are no mugs, however, and the French side have won 10 points from a possible 12 so far – a run of form which includes a 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.
Both sides squared off in the Europa League last season, with Tottenham drawing away from home and thumping them 4-1 at White Hart Lane.
And although Nicholas feels that Monaco have improved, the Sky pundit still believes the North Londoners will edge it.
“Monaco have started the season well and look like a pretty solid unit, winning 4-1 at Lille at the weekend after convincingly beating PSG 3-1,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think they’re stronger than when Spurs beat them last season, but I must admit that Spurs produced a big display at the weekend.
“Up with Arsenal’s performance against Watford and a couple of first halves from Man City, that performance at Stoke was up there with the most impressive in the Premier League so far.
“Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged that they’re starting to get over last season, especially with Harry Kane getting a goal. 2-1.”
