David Prutton has told Sky Sports that he expects high-flying Leeds United to stay top of the Championship by beating Derby County on Saturday.

The Whites and Derby renew hostilities at Elland Road this afternoon for the first meeting since County – then under Frank Lampard – knocked Marcelo Bielsa’s side out of the playoffs last season.

Last January’s Spygate saga has added an element of spice to this fixture and despite Lampard being replaced by Phillip Cocu, former Leeds star Prutton still expects ‘plenty of needle’.

Rivalry aside, Leeds are undoubtedly the in-form team, having won five of their first seven Championship games this season, compared to Cocu’s side being 19th in the table.

And Prutton wrote on Sky Sports that he reckons United – nine points ahead of the Rams – will preserve their spot at the summit.

He said: “Well well! Safe to say this is a fixture with a bit of recent history behind it. We may not have Frank Lampard involved anymore but after Spygate and that play-off semi-final, second leg there should be plenty of needle at Elland Road on Saturday.

“Leeds are top of the table heading into the weekend and the gap between themselves and Derby looks to have grown this season. I can’t see past this being a home win.”
