The former Liverpool defender was impressed with the performances of the two centre-backs against West Ham United at the weekend.
Chambers, who joined Boro on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal in the summer transfer window, and Gibson featured in the Premier League game at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The duo played important roles in Middlesbrough earning a 1-1 draw with the Hammers in London.
Thompson was impressed with the performances of Chambers and Gibson.
“He played very well,” said Thompson when asked about the performance of Chambers on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, October 1, 2016). “Him and Gibson at the back were very very good.”
“Both centre-backs did far better than they had done recently,” added Thompson.

Middlesbrough are 16th in the Premier League table at the moment with just six points from seven matches.
Boro, who got promoted from the Championship at the end of last season, are only two points above the relegation zone.
