The Tottenham Hotspur star is certain to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.

Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier picked his favoured England starting XI for the World Cup in Russia this summer, and chose to omit Tottenham ace Eric Dier, labelling the 24-year-old as ‘overrated’.

Dier joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be in the region of £4 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular for both club and country.

The 24-year-old’s versatility is the key feature of his game, and his ability to play in central defence or the deep-lying midfield role has proven to be crucial to both Tottenham and the England national team.

Le Tissier has not been impressed with the Spurs star’s form recently, however.

The Southampton legend picked his preferred England team for the World Cup, when writing a column for Sky Sports, and chose to leave Dier out:

“I’m not picking Eric Dier or Jordan Henderson because I think they are both overrated and I’d actually have Lewis Cook over them, but that back seven is very average looking.”

Not many people are giving England much hope at this summer’s World Cup, but perhaps that will work in their favour, with expectation levels being as low as they have been for the past couple of decades.

Following Le Tissier’s comments, though, Dier will surely feel like he has a point to prove in Russia this summer.
