Liverpool legend Phil Thompson highlighted on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, October 1, 2016) a mistake the West Ham United players made against Middlesbrough at the weekend.

West Ham’s poor run of form in the Premier League continued on Saturday afternoon, as they failed to win against Middlesbrough.

The Hammers played out a 1-1 draw with Boro at the London Stadium as they remain in the bottom three.

After a goalless first half, Cristhian Stuani put Boro in the lead six minutes into the second period. Dimitri Payet restored parity for the Hammers in the 57th minute with a superb effort.

Former Liverpool defender Thompson was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of Payet.

The former England international, though, suggested that the West Ham players should have done more to give the ball to the France international attacking midfielder.

“Payet really came into the game,” said Thompson on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, October 1, 2016).

“He was the only shining light. I know he is their best player, but I was quite surprised because he was having a major influence.

“I am watching the game, I am thinking, ‘Give him the ball, just give him the ball all the time’, and they didn’t find him enough for him to make an impression to sort of go on and win the game.”

West Ham will take on Crystal Palace away from home at Selhurst Park in the Premier League after the international break.

Slaven Bilic’s side have picked up just four points from seven matches in the league so far this season.
