Liverpool have cash to burn following the £145 million sale of Philippe Coutinho.
Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson shared what he believes the Reds should be looking to do during this month’s transfer window, when writing a column for Sky Sports, and admitted that he cannot see much action at Anfield as far as potential incomings go.
Liverpool have already splashed the cash this month, laying out £75 million to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, and they have already agreed a deal to bring Naby Keita to Merseyside from RB Leipzig, although he will not arrive until the summer, unless the Reds can convince the Bundesliga side to sanction his exit before the close of the January window.
Jürgen Klopp’s side currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League table, a distant 18 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, and many believe that the German must bolster his ranks at Anfield, if he is to guide his side to a top four finish.
Thompson, though, explained why he cannot see much business being done at his former club this month, when writing a column for Sky Sports:
“The Emre Can situation is a blot on the copybook as I think he has already agreed a move to Juventus. Players are running the contracts down to get the big payday, like Sanchez did, and if it drags on beyond January then he is definitely not going to sign a new deal at Liverpool. I can’t really see any other business being done as the target has to be signing quality and that is tough to find in the final week of the winter window, unless we could convince Leipzig to let us have Naby Keita early. I don’t see that happening, though, but with Adam Lallana getting back to fitness and Virgil van Dijk already signed, Liverpool should still have enough for a top-four finish.”
Liverpool still have two games to deal with before the transfer window slams shut – an FA Cup tie against West Brom and a Premier League trip to Huddersfield Town, so there will be little time for Klopp to conduct his business, if he does indeed intend to bring any new faces into the club.
