Neil Mellor has praised Leeds United, and singled out Charlie Taylor for his excellent display.

Pundit Neil Mellor has told Sky Sports Soccer Special (13/12/1016) that he felt Leeds United were much the better side in their 2-0 win over Reading on Tuesday night.

After losing 2-0 away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday evening, Leeds were back at Elland Road on Tuesday night, as third-placed Reading travelled to West Yorkshire.

Leeds claimed all three points in an impressive performance, as Chris Wood converted from close range after Reading had failed to clear Hadi Sacko’s cross, before Souleymane Doukara converted a late penalty after Charlie Taylor had been fouled inside the area.

The win means that Leeds have taken fifth place in the Championship table, and sit just three points behind third-placed Reading having beaten Jaap Stam’s Royals with an impressive performance.

After the final whistle, pundit Neil Mellor spoke to Sky Sports Soccer Special (13/12/2016) about the game, and heaped praise on the display from Garry Monk’s Leeds side.

Former Liverpool and Preston striker Mellor suggested that Leeds fully deserved their victory, and praised striker Wood for reacting quickest to a loose ball to score his goal, but noted that Leeds will be concerned about his injury.

Mellor added that he felt it was a soft penalty for the second goal, but praised left back Charlie Taylor for an excellent performance, with Premier League teams no doubt watching the youngster, given that his contract expires at the end of the season.

Mellor concluded by saying that Monk will be proud of his side for their display and the way in which they defended, as they were brave when Reading were trying to equalise, with centre backs Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson hard to beat.

“A fully deserved win,” said Mellor. “It was a big win for Leeds because they’re up there in the play-off places. You look at the opening goal, and it’s who reacts quickest inside the penalty area, and it’s the Leeds centre forward Chris Wood, with Reading a little bit static defensively. Wood has been a big player for Leeds but he went off injured which will be a concern for them.”

“It was perhaps a little bit of a soft penalty, with Charlie Taylor – who was excellent from left full back – getting forward, and Doukara stepping up to clinch the three points. Garry Monk will be proud with his side because they had more purpose about them, the way they defended as well, they were really brave. Leeds were much the better team,” he added.
