Speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has been discussing the fraught relationship between Tottenham and Chelsea in recent years after being asked about the potential of Christian Pulisic signing for Spurs.
It’s no secret that Spurs and Chelsea haven’t gotten on over the past two decades, and a lot of that was down to Roman Abramovich’s disdain for the north London club.
No player has signed directly from Chelsea to Spurs since Gus Poyet in 2001.
Indeed, the former Chelsea owner refused to do any business with Spurs during his time at Stamford Bridge, with Carlton Cole relaying the story of how much Abramovich didn’t like Spurs on talkSPORT.
“I almost joined Spurs. I went and did my medical and everything,” Cole said.
“Roman Abramovich found out and he said ‘you’ve got to come back, you’re not joining them’.
“He said ‘you can’t go to Spurs, I don’t do business with them’.”
However, now that Todd Boehly has bought Chelsea, Thomas has suggested that dealings between Spurs and Chelsea could be back on the table, stating that any bad blood from the past is now considered water under the bridge.

Spurs could sign players from Chelsea
Thomas shared what he knows about this improving relationship.
“I’m not aware that he’s (Pulisic) on Spurs’ radar, but there has been a bit of a reset with Chelsea now they’re under new ownership, so any bad blood between Tottenham and Chelsea in the past is water under the bridge now in terms of the clubs because so many have moved on from Chelsea and it’s a new club in many ways,” Thomas said.
Useful ally
Spurs fans probably have plenty to say themselves about Chelsea, but when it comes to transfers, the Blues are a useful ally to have.
The west Londoners have so many fringe players that could be useful for Tottenham – the likes of Conor Gallagher, Hakim Ziyech and Pulisic himself could all be assets for Spurs.
Having Chelsea as an ally is a boost for Spurs, and it will be interesting to see if the north London club make the most of this new relationship.
