Paul Merson has criticised Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in The Daily Star.
The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, does not believe that Aubameyang is doing enough to earn his salary at the Gunners.
The 31-year-old striker signed a new contract with Arsenal in September 2020 and is on £250,000 per week without loyalty payments and bonuses, according to The Times.
Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Willian has not got going at all, and is having a real nightmare. And Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been atrocious. What does he bring to the party? Absolutely nothing at the moment.
“You need big performances from your big players when things aren’t going well. Arsenal aren’t getting that. That’s a dangerous thing. Has Aubameyang relaxed too much after signing his contract? Only he can answer that. But he’s not earning his money.”
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s struggles
Aubameyang is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and is arguably the most important player at Arsenal.
The 31-year-old scored 22 goals and provided three assists in the league and scored three goals in the Europa League for the Gunners last season, according to WhoScored.
So far this season, the Gabon international striker has scored two goals and provided one assist in 10 Premier League games and has scored one goal in 29 Europa League matches, according to WhoScored.
Aubameyang has been deployed out on the left, and that is one of the reasons why he has not scored too many goals this season.
Arsenal are not creating too many chances, which is another reason why the Gabon international is not hitting the back of the net on a regular basis.
