Paul Merson suggested on Sky Sports Main Event (10:10pm, October 1, 2020) that Xherdan Shaqiri will leave Liverpool before the summer transfer window closes on Monday.

The former Arsenal star made the comments following Liverpool’s defeat to the Gunners in the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

Shaqiri was left out of the Reds’ squad, with manager Jurgen Klopp suggesting to The Mirror that it was due to interest in him from clubs.

Goal.com claimed that Klopp did not want to have an injury to the Switzerland international winger, which is why he did not include him in the squad.

Merson said on Sky Sports Main Event (10:10pm, October 1, 2020) when asked if Shaqiri’s Liverpool career is over: “I would say so. I like Shaqiri. I think there will be takers for him.

“I think he’s a good player, but if you are not in the squad here, you are nowhere near the first team. I think it could be curtains.”

Leaving Liverpool

Shaqiri has been essentially a squad player at Liverpool, and although he has won the Champions League and the Premier League with the Reds, his contribution has not really been a lot.

According to WhoScored, the winger made two starts and five substitute appearances in the Premier League last season, while back in 2018-19, he made 11 starts and 13 substitute appearances in the league.

The former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan is a very good winger who is still only 28 years of age and has a lot to offer.

The winger is very much capable of playing for a club challenging for the Champions League places or pushing for league titles.
